What to Pack for a Ski Holiday

Aug 15, 2025 | Advice

Packing for a ski trip can feel like a mountain in itself, especially if it’s your first time. With years of experience helping families get slope ready, we have put together this practical guide to help you pack smart and stress-free. Whether you’re heading to the Alps or further afield, use this checklist to stay warm, safe, and fully prepared.

Essential Ski Clothing

Base layers and mid layers

The key to staying warm on the slopes is layering. Start with thermal base layers that wick moisture away from your skin. Add a mid layer, like a fleece or lightweight insulated jacket, for extra warmth. Make sure all layers are breathable to help regulate temperature during active days on the snow.

Waterproof outerwear

A quality ski jacket and salopettes (ski trousers) are non-negotiable. Look for waterproof, windproof materials with insulated linings to keep you dry and warm throughout the day.

Gloves, socks, and accessories

Thermal ski socks, waterproof gloves or mittens, and a neck warmer or buff should all make your list. Cold hands and damp feet are a quick way to ruin a great day, so don’t skimp on these items.

Travel Essentials and Paperwork

Important documents

Bring your passport, travel insurance details, lift pass confirmations, and any booking information for lessons you have booked with us. Having digital and printed copies can be a lifesaver if your phone battery dies in the cold.

Travel-friendly extras

Snacks, hand sanitiser, tissues, and a reusable water bottle can all make your journey easier. If you’re travelling with children, bring entertainment for transfers and flights.

Packing Tips and Luggage Advice

Choose the right bag

Ski resorts aren’t always suitcase friendly, especially when snow piles up. Use a durable duffel bag or soft-shell luggage that’s easy to carry and can fit bulky clothing.

Make the most of your space

Roll your clothes, pack socks into boots, and use compression packing cubes to keep everything organised. Helmets and ski boots take up space, so plan accordingly.

What to Pack for the Slopes

Equipment and safety gear

If you’re renting gear at your destination, there’s no need to pack skis, boots, or poles. Just don’t forget your helmet and goggles. We can point you toward trusted local rental shops if needed. If you’re bringing your own equipment, make sure it’s serviced before the trip.

On-mountain essentials

Pack lip balm with SPF, high-factor sunscreen, tissues, and a snack bar or two for energy between runs. A small backpack or crossbody bag is handy for carrying these items on the slopes.

Après-ski and downtime clothing

You’ll need comfortable clothes for evenings in the resort. Think warm jumpers, jeans or joggers, and cosy footwear. If your accommodation has a spa or pool, don’t forget swimwear and flip-flops. A pair of slippers or indoor shoes is useful for walking around chalet floors.

Technology and charging essentials

Bring plug adaptors, chargers, and power banks for all your devices. It’s also worth packing headphones, cameras, or GoPros if you want to capture your family’s ski adventures. Snow School instructors are always happy to help grab a quick photo between lessons.
